Polish consortium established for rolling stock tenders

Pesa and Newag Pesa and Newag submitted a declaration to jointly participate in public procurement procedures for the supply of double-decker trains and locomotives.

The two Polish manufacturers will participate to the tenders which include the supply of 38 seven-car push-pull double-decker trains 45 multi-system locomotives as well as the provision of maintenance services for multi-system locomotives for PKP Intercity.

“We are convinced that thanks to the experience gathered so far by our teams, we can jointly offer PKP IC a modern double-decker trains that can be competitive not only in Poland, but also on European markets,” Krzysztof Zdziarski, the President of the Management Board of Pesa said.

“The decision to establish a consortium result from the fact that submitting individual bids would entail a significant risk of failure to perform the contract due to the complexity of the subject of the contract, production capabilities in the context of its completion date and other contractual obligations. We believe that the concluded consortium will have a positive impact on the further dynamic development of railways in Poland,” Zbigniew Konieczek, the President of the Management Board of Newag said.

Pesa and Newag are the largest Polish rolling stock manufacturers who have been successfully delivering rail vehicles to customers on the Polish and European market for years. Both companies produce modern, innovative rolling stock based on their own solutions and designs that are created in their design offices.

The establishment of the consortium and submission of a joint application for admission to the procedure announced by PKP Intercity means that the teams of both companies, as part of the technical dialogue, have started joint work on a double-decker vehicle dedicated to PKP Intercity.

Pesa is the only Polish manufacturer that designed and delivered push pull sets, such as double-decker passenger trains consisting of a steering car, middle carriages, and an electric locomotive. The double-decker Pesa Sundeck coaches has been operated by Koleje Mazowieckie since 2016 and has gained very good opinions from both passengers and staff. Pesa has produced over 600 multiple units, and is consistently developing the family of locomotives, including the sale of a modern dual-drive locomotive.

Newag is the leader of the locomotive market in Poland, and its Griffin and Dragon locomotives achieve very high reliability rates and are recognised by the rail carriers. Griffin is the first Polish multi-system locomotive adapted to both the domestic 3kV DC power supply system and the 15kV or 25kV AC power supply systems in force in European countries. The 6-axle Dragon locomotive, designed for driving heavy freight trains, is also adapted for operation on European markets. The company has so far delivered over 80 electric locomotives and over 200 passenger multiple units. Recently, Newag and PKP Intercity signed a new contract for the supply of additional locomotives.
