ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager, awarded Arcadis a contract for construction supervision and back-office support for the extensive renovation of Amsterdam Centraal Station. Arcadis has secured the contract for the station’s redevelopment, which will run for six years.
“We’re pleased to have Arcadis as a partner. They have extensive knowledge of the historic station, which will be very valuable to us,” said project manager at ProRail, Mariëlle van den Bovenkamp.
Arcadis will be responsible for overseeing the construction work and managing the back-office operations for the station’s renovations. They will also play a key role in coordinating between subcontractors and stakeholders to maintain safety, consistency, and operational continuity through the complex renovation process.
The renovation of Amsterdam Centraal Station includes widening and extending platforms, constructing a new bicycle parking facility beneath the tracks, widening the eastern passenger tunnel, building a grade-separated rail crossing near Dijksgracht, and replacing the five railway bridges at the eastern entrance. The station’s historic architectural features will be carefully restored to preserve its cultural and monumental significance.
The six-year project transformation has a potential fee value of EUR 21 million with options for two one-year extensions. In addition to this new role, Arcadis has been executing work on Amsterdam Central Station for ProRail, one of its strategic partners through its key client program, through several framework agreements for over 10 years.
The project will update the historic station to accommodate growing passenger volumes and multimodal transport, all while the station remains fully operational.
