Stadler to deliver high-capacity FLIRT trains for Arlanda Express

Stadler has secured a contract from Swedish rail operator of the Arlanda Express, A-Train AB, to supply seven new FLIRT multiple-unit trains, with an option for an eighth unit. The new fleet will operate between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station from the end of 2029, offering more than 50% additional seating capacity compared to the current trains. The CHF 350 million (EUR 373 million) order includes a 15-year maintenance agreement.

The new trains, which will be built at Stadler’s facility in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, will begin production in late 2026. This marks the first time Stadler vehicles will be deployed on the high-profile Arlanda Express service.

Customised design for Arlanda Express

The FLIRT trains have been tailored to A-Train AB’s specifications, including an interior inspired by the Nordic aesthetic of the Arlanda Express lounge at Stockholm Central Station. The design prioritises light, open spaces, comfort, and a premium travel experience. Seating configurations will cater to a range of passengers, including lounge-style areas for groups and quieter zones for individual travellers.

Increased capacity and accessibility

Each 165-metre train will accommodate 323 seated passengers, significantly boosting capacity. The new fleet will also feature:

  • Step-free access and dual entrance heights (1150 mm and 760 mm)
  • Dedicated wheelchair spaces
  • Generous luggage areas for large suitcases and hand luggage
  • A clearly visible customer service counter

Engineered for Nordic conditions, the FLIRT trains will operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h with a high level of traction, ensuring reliable service year-round.

“This order shows once again how flexibly and individually our FLIRT can be adapted to specific customer requirements – whether in terms of technology or design. We are delighted that A-Train AB has placed its trust in us… The fact that we can also maintain the trains for 15 years shows that we also stand for top quality in this area,” Peter Spuhler, Chairman of Stadler’s Board of Directors, said.

“With this investment, we continue to deliver top-class customer service… We see a clear increase in leisure travellers choosing to travel with Arlanda Express, and the increased capacity makes it possible to welcome even more,” Magnus Zetterberg, CEO of A-Train AB, commented.

The new fleet will replace A-Train AB’s existing trains, which have been in service since 1999. The full transition to the Stadler-built FLIRT units will coincide with the end-of-life for the current trains in 2029.
