Transports Montreux-Vevey-Riviera (MVR), part of the Montreux Oberland Bahn (MOB) group in Switzerland, has signed a contract with Stadler for the supply of eight new rack-and-pinion trains. The state-of-the-art vehicles will operate on the Montreux–Rochers-de-Naye route, replacing the existing 40-year-old fleet from 2029.
The agreement, signed on 20 May 2025, marks a significant upgrade for the scenic mountain railway, which climbs to more than 2,000 metres above sea level. The new fleet has been designed with panoramic travel in mind, offering passengers enhanced views of the Vaud Alps and Lake Geneva thanks to large wraparound windows and thoughtfully configured interiors.
Rochers-de-Naye Line trains: Designed for tourists
The new cogwheel multiple units are being developed entirely from scratch at Stadler’s Bussnang plant in Thurgau. Each train will be approximately 40 metres long and accommodate up to 216 passengers, including a dedicated first-class section. A standout design feature is the uninterrupted view through the driver’s cab and the large panoramic windows in the central carriage.
MOB and Stadler collaborated with Italian design firm Pininfarina to create the vehicle’s sleek exterior and modern interior layout, combining comfort with aesthetic appeal.
Built for gradients as steep as 220 per thousand, the new trains integrate the latest technical features, including regenerative braking, which feeds energy back into the power grid, and an energy-efficient air conditioning system that meets the highest environmental standards.
“The world of mountain railways is being revolutionised because this is undoubtedly the most beautiful cable car ever built,” said Georges Oberson, CEO of MOB.
Frédéric Evequoz, Sales Manager for bespoke vehicles at Stadler, added: “This is a very special project for Stadler. The combination of iconic design, cutting-edge rack railway technology and panoramic travel makes this fleet truly unique. We are proud to help deliver a memorable experience on the way to Rochers-de-Naye.”
