Winner for Melbourne Metro’s RIA contract announced

Victorian Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, announced that consortium comprising John Holland, CPB Contractors and AECOM has been selected as the preferred bidder to deliver the AUD 1 billion (USD 741.6 million) Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA) works package for Melbourne Metro Tunnel.
This is the last major contract as part of the Metro Tunnel project and will include works at the eastern and western tunnel entrances and exits (portals) including cut and cover tunnelling, decline structures and the reconfiguration and realignment of existing lines to connect the new Metro Tunnel rail tracks to the existing surface network. RIA will also deliver associated tunnel, track and signalling works along the Sunbury and Dandenong lines to support the reconfiguration of the rail network to support day one operations of the Metro Tunnel.
The consortium will build the tunnel entrances in South Yarra and Kensington, which will each see thousands of passengers pass through every hour before their trains go underground and onto twin 9 km tracks beneath Melbourne.
Around 1000 people will work on the RIA package, which is part of the AUD 11 billion (USD 8 billion) project that is on budget and ahead of schedule. Site preparations ahead of portal construction will commence later this year, with most RIA works expected to be finished in line with the completion of the tunnels and stations, by the end of 2025.
