Uruguay launched USD 800 million rail tender

Uruguay’s Public Works and Transport Ministry (MTOP) published the bidding documents for the project to build a 373km rail freight line between Montevideo port and the city of Paso de los Toros (Tacuarembó department).

The project is budgeted at USD 800 million and will be carried out under a PPP model. Aside from the rail line, it includes 40 overpasses and underpasses. The concession period is 22 years.

Public works minister Victor Rossi said the bids to build the rail line will be opened on April 9, 2018, but the awarding won’t happen until November 1.

The project is called Central Rail (Ferrocarril Central) and aimes to develop a railway model in accordance with international service standards. The new line has a length of 273 kilometers, to which an additional section of 26 kilometers is added. A dozen secondary rail tracks for train crossings, a section of track for industrial access and more than 40 railway bridges are among the most important works related to this line.
