UK: new Abbey Wood station platform opened for service

08-Abbey woodThe first passenger services have stopped at the new Abbey Wood station, as the rebuilt platform for the London-bound North Kent line opened to Southeastern services. Wider than the old platform, with increased canopy cover, better lighting and new customer information screens, this is the first part of the new station to be brought into use.
Network Rail is building a new landmark station and two miles of track at the site in Abbey Wood in preparation for Crossrail, the new east-west railway for London and the South East. Abbey Wood station, on the route, opens to Crossrail services in 2018 and will eventually link up with Reading and Heathrow Airport.
The number of platforms in operation at the station is set to double. Work will now begin on rebuilding the platform for the Kent-bound North Kent line, which will be brought into use for Southeastern services in August.
“The completion of the new London-bound platform marks another major milestone for the work taking place at Abbey Wood. Local people will benefit from a new station with significantly improved facilities and better connections across London,” Mathew Steele, Crossrail programme director at Network Rail, said.
