Three stations set for upgrade in Barcelona area

Adif has awarded a EUR 1.9 million contract for the design of building, track, and electrification projects on Barcelona Cercanías which will benefit from three new stations. These plans will define the most appropriate technical and construction solutions with the aim of enhancing the operational capacity, functionality, efficiency, modernity, safety, and sustainability of the facilities, while ensuring full accessibility and seamless connectivity across the different areas of the stations.

Barcelona Cercanías

The Spanish rail infrastructure manager will redevelop and upgrade Sant Sadurní d’Anoia (Alt Penedès), Tordera (Maresme), and Montcada i Reixac-Manresa (Vallès Occidental) stations, part of the Barcelona Cercanías, under the “Transforming commuter rail” plan (Trasformem Rodalíes). These measures will help raise the quality standards of railway operations and improve the service provided to users of Barcelona’s suburban rail transport network.

The main works to be included in the construction projects will generally involve the extension and lengthening of platforms, the redevelopment of access points and car parks at Sant Sadurní d’Anoia station, and improvements to accessibility at both this station and Montcada i Reixac-Manresa.

The programme will be carried out on two stages. The design phase will take 18 months to complete, followed by a construction supervision phase which will be carried out in 12 months.

Sant Sadurní d’Anoia station, which serves line R4 of the commuter network, has a central platform that is currently the only one used for commuter rail services. The project will include modifications to the track layout and propose measures to improve accessibility on the platforms and at the connecting walkways between them. It will also aim to enhance integration with the surrounding urban environment and key areas of interest within the town.

Works at this station include the refurbishment of the existing passenger building, standardising its exterior appearance and improving both internal and external passenger circulation, as well as adapting the station to meet new urban and accessibility requirements. Work will be carried out for the extension and/or installation of new canopies on the platforms and an overall improvement of the lighting installations, designated zones for vehicle stops, covering public transport  and private vehicles, as well as external urbanisation of the station to facilitate access.

The project at Tordera station aims to address the current traffic management issues identified at this station, which serves lines R1 and RG1 of the Barcelona Cercanías and is located on a 15 km single-track section between Blanes and Maçanet. A technical solution will be developed to improve train crossing operations and enhance overall operational efficiency.

To this end, actions and measures will be studied which include the construction of a 200-metre long new passing loop and its corresponding platform, works on tracks, platforms, and the connections between platforms as well as on the passenger building, access points, and car park. In addition, an assessment of the need to design a grade-separated crossing between platforms will be developed together with an analysis of accessibility compliance on the platforms.

The Montcada i Reixac-Manresa station serves line R4 of Barcelona commuter rail system and works involve the extension of the platforms to a useful length of 200 metres, as well as improving accessibility and connectivity between platforms, since there is currently no internal connecting passage. The project at this station will include the construction of an accessible route from the station entrances to the trains, including a passenger underpass, new pedestrian underpass and the redevelopment of the surrounding urban area.

The new underpass will be accessible and must take into account potential constraints from the feasibility study for doubling the Barcelona-Puigcerdà line on the Montcada Bifurcació–Mollet section. The station will have new canopy connecting the existing one with the underpass, modernised facilities including efficient lighting, ducting, communications, and public address systems, a modernised passenger concourse to ensure an accessible route between the station entrance and the platform level.
