Sofia-Vidin, Bulgaria’s the most expensive rail project

Bulgarian Transport Minister, Ivaylo Moskovski, said that Vidin-Sofia is the most expensive railway project, with the indicative value of the investments of EUR 2.31 billion. Another expensive and important project envisages the modernisaion of Sofia – Kulata railway line, part of Eastern/Mediterranean Corridor, with an estimated value of EUR 1.22 billion.
For the construction and modernisation of all priority lines, on TEN-T core network projects, by 2030, Bulgaria needs a EUR 4.3 billion investment, the minister said. As part of comprehensive network, Bulgaria intends to use EUR 173 million for the modernisation of Karnobat-Sindel railway line, which is 123 km long. This route is of great importance as it connects the two biggest sea ports of Varna and Burgas.
Regarding the cross-border projects, the minister announced that EUR 132 million investment is needed for the modernization of Voluyak – Dragoman – Serbian border railway line, which is also part of the TEN-T core network and is identified by the EU Council as a priority cross-border section.
For the realisation of the railway connectivity with Macedonia a technical assistance project for the modernization of Sofia-Pernik-Radomir-Gyueshevo-Macedonian border railway line has already been launched. The estimated value for the construction of Radomir – Gyueshevo – Macedonian border railway line is EUR 477 million.
