Škoda begins Ostrava facility expansion

Škoda Transportation has officially held a ceremony for the expansion of Škoda Vagonka production facility in Ostrava.

The CZK 1 billion (EUR 39.5 million) project will see a doubled size of the current facility, from 30,000 square metres to 60,000. It is expected that the staff will be increased from 450 to 900 employees.

Under the project, CZK 300 million (EUR 11.86 million) will be invested for a new paint shop, CZK 100 million (EUR 3.95 million) for the machining centre, CZK 200 million (EUR 7.9 million) for the expansion of the production line, CZK 70 million (EUR 2.76 million) for new machines and land acquisition, thermal insulation of buildings, facilities for employees and warehouse equipment.

“Škoda Ostrava plant will significantly increase the production capacity and train manufacturing will be more efficient, while also will involve hiring new employees. In addition, our subsidiary Škoda Digital will be situated also in Ostrava, allowing us to continue the development of the technological know-how in the fields of control, multimedia, and diagnostics systems,” said Petr Brzezina, the president of Škoda Group.

The number of monthly assembled cars will significantly increase, and the production of rough aluminum structures will increase by five-times. The facility will be responsible mainly for the manufacturing of single deck EMUs for customers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Latvia as well as push-pull coaches for Moravia-Silesia region.
