Signalling contract for Ferrocarril Central awarded

A consortium comprising CAF Signalling and Revenga Smart Solutions, won a EUR 50 million contract for the design, production, installation, testing and commissioning of all the communication and signalling systems for the Ferrocarril Central project in Uruguay.
The 276-km Ferrocarril Central connects the city of Paso de los Toros, in the centre of the country, to the Port of Montevideo.
CAF Signalling will implement a new electronic interlocking, a centralised traffic control system for the line as well as the ERTMS L1 system.
The system will enable freight train transit between both cities and will also cater for mixed traffic on a 36 km section in Montevideo metropolitan area. This will reinforce the capacity and cover requirements of passenger transit in the area.
Ferrocarril Central project envisages the construction and maintenance of the 273 km line to allow a 22.5 tonnes axle load, with freight trains running at speeds of 80 km/h.
The USD 1 billion project includes double-track construction on a 26-km rail section, a track for industrial access, and the modernisation of the existing secondary sections and 40 railway bridges. The defined route includes the by-pass of several populated centers and the rectification of curves, to allow greater safety for trains.
