Rail Baltica unveils the qualified teams for energy subsystem

Rail Baltica electrification Three international candidates have qualified for the second stage of the Rail Baltica electrification project covering the design and construction procurement of the energy subsystem. The qualified joint ventures are:

  • COBELEC Rail Baltica – is a partnership formed by Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios and Elecnor Servicios y Proyectos from Spain;
  • Alstom – BMGS – GE – Torpol – a joint venture formed by BMGS AS, Bombardier Transportation Baltics SIA, Alstom Transport SA, GE Energy Power Conversion France SAS, Torpol, from Latvia, France and Poland;
  • STC Baltic Electrification – a partnership formed by Colas Rail, Siemens Mobility GmbH, Siemens Mobility Oy Latvijas filiāle, TSO SAS, from France, Germany and Latvia.

This phase is planned to commence in the following months with an aim to sign the contract by the end of 2023.

In 2022, RB Rail AS selected an engineering service (ENE Engineer) for the global project energy subsystem deployment. The association of DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH, Idom Consulting, Engineering, Architecture, Italferr was announced as the winner in an international tender, carried out by RB Rail AS.

Crucial components of the energy subsystem include high voltage connection points to link traction power substations to the public high voltage electrical grids, traction power substations, overhead contact system, energy control command system, and other components that are directly connected to the energy subsystem.

The tender was announced in June 2022. The Rail Baltica electrification covers the entire double track line with a length of 870 km which requires the installation of more than 2,000 km of catenary system, 50,000 masts and 4,350 tonnes of copper materials.

The deployment of the energy subsystem will begin from Tallinn to the Lithuania – Poland border and from Kaunas to Vilnius.

European Union will co-finance up to 85% of the total eligible costs through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) with the remaining financing granted by the three Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
