The European Commission has launched the 12 week online public consultation on 2030 Climate Target Plan, as part of the European Green Deal.
Starting from 31 March until 23 June, all citizens and organisations are invited to share their views on this new target and also on the sectoral and transversal actions. This consultation also welcomes input in the form of position papers, policy briefs, sectoral roadmaps and studies.
Based on a comprehensive impact assessment and analysis of the national energy and climate plans, the plan aims to draw from the views, opinions and contributions by a broad range of stakeholders
In September 2020, the EC will present a plan to propose increasing the current EU climate target for 2030 of at least -40% greenhouse gas emissions reductions to at least -50% and towards -55%, compared to 1990 emissions levels.
Revising the current 2030 target will help Europe in achieving its objective to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The Commission will also propose to put this new climate target into EU law, first through an amendment of the recently proposed European Climate Law, and later through sectoral legislative proposals.
The European Climate Law aims to write into law the goal set out in the European Green Deal for Europe’s economy and society to become climate-neutral by 2050.

The transport sector is among most important sectors which needs a real shift to the sustainable means, as it currently represents a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and is the main cause of air pollution in the cities. Thus, the EC announced this year the main principles on the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy which will create a more sustainable, connected and digitalised transport system.
To achieve the targets, the EC will launch initiatives to increase the share of more sustainable transport modes such as rail and inland waterways. Railway transport will benefit EC support as it is able to answer mobility needs is a sustainable manner. This March, the EC has announced that 2021 will be the year of rail which will help Green Deal to achieve its objectives on transport sector.
