ÖBB acquires 17 double-decker IC trains from DB

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has secured a deal to purchase 17 IC double-decker trains from Deutsche Bahn (DB), in response to growing demand and upcoming network expansions. The trains—Stadler KISS 200 units—will be integrated into ÖBB’s long-distance fleet, helping to ease capacity pressures and maintain service quality.

The additional double-decker IC trains are expected to enter service from autumn 2025, ahead of the planned introduction of new Railjet double-decker units currently on order. The acquired trains will be deployed primarily on InterCity (IC) routes, particularly on the western corridor between Vienna and Salzburg, which has experienced strong passenger growth in recent years.

The faster Railjet Xpress (RJX) services will continue to be operated using the existing Railjet fleet.

Once in service, the six-car IC double-decker trains will provide a 20% increase in seating capacity on the IC line. Each unit offers 486 seats—66 in First Class and 420 in Second Class—alongside eight bicycle spaces and two wheelchair spaces.

The fleet includes eight six-car and nine four-car trainsets. The six-car trains are set to begin passenger operations by autumn 2025, with the shorter formations expected to join the fleet the following year. Prior to their deployment, all vehicles will undergo a light refurbishment.

The trains feature a wide range of passenger amenities including barrier-free access, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power outlets, spacious luggage racks, and vending machines for snacks and beverages.

With this acquisition, ÖBB aims to ensure continued comfort and reliability for passengers, while supporting future service enhancements such as those associated with the forthcoming Koralmbahn project.
