Milestone for Berlin S-Bahn new trains

Siemens has announced that the assembly of the first new half train for Berlin S-Bahn is completed.
The four-car train is assembled, the blue and black seats, handrails and wall coverings being mounted. The new trains will have large panoramic windows and generous space for strollers and bicycles and special area for wheelchair users.
Within the next few days, the train will be transferred to the Stadler location in Velten, where it will be commissioned. Technically, this step includes all the activities necessary to bring the finished rail vehicle into an operational condition. In practical terms, it means that the software required for all functions is installed and then tested for each technical component.
“The new half-train describe the future and will increase the quality and safety of the S-Bahn and lead them into the 21st century. I am pleased that we have a clear perspective that has become visible and tangible today,” Michael Müller, the Mayor of Berlin said.
In 2016, S-Bahn Berlin GmbH signed a framework contract with the consortium (Stadler-Siemens) for the supply of 1,380 vehicles, with a firm order for 106 trains. The order envisages the supply of 85 four-section and 21 two-section trains.
Within the contract, the first 10 vehicles will enter services in 2020, all remaining vehicles being delivered continuously by 2023.
The new trains will be deployed on the Ringbahn lines (S41 and S42) as well as on the system’s southeastern feeder lines S47, S46 and S8, all these lines counting one-third of the entire S-Bahn network in Berlin.
Under the project, Siemens supplies the electrical equipment, including the propulsion and braking systems, on-board power supply system, vehicle and train control systems, passenger information system and vehicle bogies. Stadler is responsible for the mechanical and structural aspects of the construction and production, including, the air conditioning system and assembly of all components.
