Malaga opens 1.7 km metro extension

Malaga Metro extensionThe president of Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, and the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, inaugurated Malaga Metro extension  linking El Perchel and Atarazanas stations which provides connection to the city’s historic centre.

The extension runs from the El Perchel interchange station to Atarazanas terminus station along a 1.7 km metro section with two new stations – Guadalmedina and Atarazanas. This ensures the connection of the two lines with common stations at El Perchel and Guadalmedina, the technical selected solution to provide increased comfort to passengers that do not need transfer between the two lines, as well as to deliver fast transfer to Renfe services, through Guadalmedina station. In the future, Line 2 will be extended towards Nuevo Hospital.

Both lines operate in a X scheme meaning that the passengers using Line 1 (Andalucía Tech – Atarazanas) will be able to access the Guadalmedina and Atarazanas stations without any transfers. To access Line 2 stations, passengers coming from Line 1 stations will have to change at El Perchel, but on the same platform. The passengers using Line 2 services (Palacio de Deportes – Guadalmedina) who want to make their journey to Atarazanas (on Line 1) must change at the Guadalmedina station, and to access the rest of the Line 1 stations they must make the correspondence at the station of El Perchel, on the same platform and, therefore, without having to change levels.

It is expected that together with the new underground section, the passenger demand will double the current number of users, from around 7 million passengers per year to 14 million passengers annually.

The Junta de Andalucía has invested EUR 160 million for the construction of Málaga Metro extension providing access to all facilities and interest spots in the historic centre, a commercial, tourist, cultural and administrative area.

The line “will contribute to improving speed, comfort, safety and also sustainability, allowing the reduction of some 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and a significant reduction of road traffic by avoiding 3.5 million trips by car per year. These are benefits that will help improve air quality in line with the Green Revolution and the fight against climate change,” Juanma Moreno said.

Malaga Metro network consists now of 13.6 km served by 19 stations, 14 of which are underground.
