Lithuanian Railways enters Poland market

For the first time in its history, Lithuanian Railways will transport PKP Cargo’s goods to Poland’s northeastern cities of Bialystok and Elk, under a contract signed with Polish largest railway freight operator.
Lithuanian Railways will start the transport services in Poland by the middle of the next year with two locomotives carring container freight, timber, oil and its products, and fertilizers. Under the agreement, within the first five years, LG will transport an annual volume of 1 million tonnes and in the future, it is expected to expand its geography to other Polish cities.
“For us, this is a historic contract as the cooperation with PKP Cargo allow us to start providing freight transport services in a foreign market. We will continue to develop our cooperation and intend to offer more opportunities through the development of the Rail Baltica corridor and we also see the potential in the development of the Amber Train project,” Egidijus Lazauskas, the director general of LG’s Freight Division said.
According to Lietuvos gelezinkeliai, if is necessary, the agreement also provides the possibility to use PKP Cargo locomotives.
In May, the Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai and PKP Cargo signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen the cooperation in transport field, and to improve cargo handling process at the border crossing between the two countries. Under the agreement, LG’s locomotives will hire PKP Cargo trains at the border area, from the Lithuanian-Polish state border to the Trakiškių railway station located on the territory of Poland.
