Lithuania awards GSM-R upgrade contract

LTG Infra, the railway infrastructure manager of Lithuania and Kontron Transportation signed a contract to upgrade the GSM-R radio communication system and to install new rail systems on country’s railway network. EUR 16 million is the value of the contract.

The installation of new communications devices starts this month and will be performed within the next 15 months (1,5 years), according to the contract.

Under the contract, the NSS (Network Sub – System) equipment will be modernised, modifications for the existing BSS (Base Station Sub – system) will be made and a new FDS system will be implemented. With this new update the operational connection will become even more reliable, the system will be managed automatically and the IT costs of LTG will be reduced.

After the implementation Kontron Transportation will also be responsible to maintain the new system during a period of 9 years.

The years ago, in 2010, Belam-Riga and Nortel, now Kontron Transportation, installed the GSM-R radio communication system, with 136 base stations, 281 fixed control panels and about 600 radio stations on the locomotives and other self-propelled vehicles. The awarded contract included the installation of the GSM-R radio communication system along 1,560 km of lines, representing 88% of country’s railway network. Currently, the GSM-R system is operational on 16 railway routes.

LTG Infra is responsible for the modernisation and development of the 1,767 km of railway lines. the company is implementeting a programme for GSM-R core renewal. The new equipment will ensure communication needed for safe train traffic throughout the rail network.
