Jacobs secures consultancy contract with Etihad Rail

Etihad Rail selected Jacobs Engineering Group Inc to deliver critical technical and programme consulting services for the UAE’s freight and passenger railway network.
Jacobs will deliver engineering and design services for the 900-km network, review and provide critical oversight for the detailed designs to be prepared by a network of design and build contractors, and provide construction supervision for the entire project.
The rail network will ultimately provide enhanced connectivity across geographic markets and services for both freight and passengers, with social benefits including lower transportation costs, faster journeys than highway alternatives and reduced levels of highway congestion.
Etihad Rail’s network will have 1200 km and will extend across the United Arab Emirates from the border of Saudi Arabia to the border of Oman.
Stage One of the rail network, which links Shah and Habshan to the port of Ruwais, entered commercial activity in 2015.
The second stage includes a 628-km rail connection between Mussafah, to the Gulf ports of Khalifa and Jebel Ali, and to the Saudi and Omani borders.
279 km of line will be constructed within the third stage which will extend the network from Dubai to the northern regions of Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah.
