Indian Railways to launch international tender for locomotive acquisition

Indian Railways will launch an international tender for the acquisition of 10 electric locomotives. The vehicles will be put into service after the modernisation of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata railway lines. The project is estimated at Rs 500 crore (USD 76.5 million).
“We will float the global tender for acquiring 10 electric locomotives, which can haul trains at 200 km/h and beyond, from the market shortly. The transfer of technology of the high power locomotives and their maintenance will be the responsibility of the successful bidder, besides supplying 10 locos to railways,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.
The vehicles will are expected to haul 22-24 coaches train at 200 km/h on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes to reduce the travel time. In order to match the loco capacity, it has started the manufacturing of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. These are about to be turned out from Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala.
Besides Talgo coaches, which are also meant for higher speed on the existing tracks, are to be hauled with these high speed locomotives.
