India: Kerala’s important rail projects are stagnating

indiaImportant rail projects sanctioned to address Kerala’s underdeveloped railway sector have failed to take off years after they were announced in the Union Railway Budget. Among these are the rail coach factory at Kanjikode, the wagon manufacturing unit at Cherthala, the Angamaly-Sabarimala railway line, and the conversion of three major stations into world-class facilities.
The project of the coach factory at Kanjikode was stalled because of confusion over the project implementation mode and the lack of a joint venture partner. The project of the wagon unit at Cherthala has been postponed because of alignment issues in Kottayam and Idukki, the buffer zone of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, and the Indian Railways’ request to the state to provide 50% of the costs.
