Greece opened a rail section on Athens – Thessaloniki corridor

Greek rail infrastructure manager, Ergose, has handed over the Tithorea-Lianokladi rail link, as part of the Athens – Thessaloniki rail corridor. “This marks a milestone for Ergose and for the country’s railway network, considering that 2 years ago the section was almost impracticable,” the company says.
The project involved the construction of the new double track which replaces the mountainous part of the existing 122-km single line and the modernisation of Tithoreas and Lianokladios and the construction of a nea station (Molos station). The new route passes through the new twin tunnel in Kallidromo, 9 km long, which is the largest railway tunnel of Greece and the Balkans.
The new alignment has been designed for speeds of 160-200 km/h, and starts from Tithorea railway station, to the east, crossing the Kallidromo mountain with the twin tunnel, follows a flat course through the Sperchios river valley and ends up at Lianokladi railway station.
In addition, this project includes also the modernisation of the line to Domokos, from Lianokladi station, to the Othris Mountain with a twin tunnel, 6,38 m long each, following a flat route through the dried-up lake of Xiniada and goes up to the mountainous area of Domokos until Domokos railway station.
The project also includes the installation of ETCS Level 1 and electrification works.
The total value of the project was EUR 1.8 billion funded through operational programmes and CEF 2014-2020.
The Tithorea-Lianokladi-Domokos line is located on the Orient/East-Mediterranean Corridor, and completes the upgrade of Athens-Thessaloniki axis. Its objective is to turn the entire Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki-Promachonas axis into a high-speed railway axis of increased capacity, equipped with modern signalling, tele-commanding, telecommunication and electrification systems.
