Graz Linien’s tram fleet modernisation contract awarded

03-bombardierBombardier has been commissioned by the municipal service company Holding Graz to modernize 10 three-car trams of the 500 series. The first upgraded prototype is scheduled for trial runs in the second half of next year. By the middle of 2018, all vehicles should have been modernized and be ready to be put into service by the operator, Graz Linien.
The electrical refurbishment will include the replacement of the propulsion technology, the vehicle control system and the on-board converters. These overhaul measures should add up to 16 years additional service life to the vehicles, currently the oldest in Graz Linien’s fleet. In addition, the tram’s energy efficiency and availability will be significantly increased.
“Awarding this contract to an international provider such as Bombardier Transportation will further improve the tram services offered by Graz Linien. It will make the ten vehicles from the 500 series safer and therefore also more customer-friendly. The electrical refurbishment will ensure that the ten trams will continue to make up an important part of the company’s 90 vehicle tram fleet during the coming years,” said Holding Graz’s Managing Director Barbara Muhr.
