1 Mai – Tokyo metroBucharest metro operator Metrorex and the consortium of Alsim Alarko Sanayi Tesisleri and Makyol Insaat Sanayi Turizm signed a RON 1.2 billion (EUR 242.7 million) contract for the construction of the 1 Mai – Tokyo metro section part of the future Line 6 which will provide metro connection to the Henri Coandă International Airport.

The contract was awarded through a restricted tender procedure, in SEAP – the governmental electronic procurement system, on the basis of the award criterion “best value for money”.

In July, Metrorex has announced the preferred bidder for the construction of the first section of Line 6.

The 1 Mai – Tokyo metro section, will be 6.6 km long with 6 stations – Pajura, Expoziției, Piața Montreal, Gara Băneasa, Aeroport Băneasa, Tokyo. It is the first section of the metro Line 6 which will provide metro connection to the Line 4 through the 1 Mai station and will link the central railway station Gara de Nord with the international airport.

The contract is supported by the European funds and the national budget. According to the European Commission, EUR 609 million is the total investment value for the first section of which EUR 517.6 million are covered by the Cohesion Fund through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (LIOP) 2014-2020. The project also covers the procurement of 12 6-car metro trains travelling 30 minutes from the central station to the airport.

The future Line 6 will be 14.2 km long served by 12 stations and will cross one of the most congested districts and will reduce the road traffic and emissions while providing sustainable mobility transport and contributing to the development of the region. For rail commuter traffic, the new metro line will also offer access to two train stations, increasing the transit between the city centre and its suburbs, and with Băneasa airport used for private and charter flights. Line 6 is considered a branch of the existing Line 4 and is the first high capacity public transport line connecting the North and South districts of the Romania’s capital.

The Bucharest International Airport is also served by a 19.5 km heavy rail line opened in September 2020 by the President Klaus Iohannis.

Metrorex is currently developing the entire metro system which includes the extension of the Line 2, the construction of the Eroilor-Iancului section as part of the Line 5 that was also inaugurated in September 2020.
