Contract for Abu Dhabi operation and maintenance facility awarded

Etihad Rail awarded to a JV led by VINCI Construction France a AED 846 million (USD 229 million) contract for the construction of the central operation and maintenance (O&M) facility at Al Faya, in Abu Dhabi, during a remote meeting on April 2.

Being responsible for warehousing, installations, operations, and the maintenance of locomotives and wagons, the facility will be the most important facility on the UAE rail network. It will also include an administrative building to control the operations of the whole network.

The federal and local government authorities have already issued all necessary licenses and permits to implement the project.

During a virtual visit of the construction site in Saih Sheib region, the Chairman of Etihad Rail Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan launched the civil works on Package B under the second stage of the UEA railway network project.

Package B extends over 216 km and includes the construction of a second concrete railway sleeper factory and rail routes to Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), Khalifa Port, and the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD).

In June 2019, civil and track contracts valuated at AED 4.4 billion (USD 1.19 billion) for the Package B and Package C. the contracts were signed with China Railway Construction Corporation and Ghantoot Transport & General Contracting Company.

Etihad Rail has awarded all civil works and construction contracts for Stage Two of the UAE national railway network.

The company has also launched construction on Package A, signed a contract for the construction of a series of freight facilities centres, and awarded a contract for the delivery of locomotives to expand the company’s fleet to 45.
