4 Pasazieru Vilciens diesel trains upgrade completed

latviaDMU Vilcieni has upgraded the rolling stock of four diesel trains of Latvian rail company Pasazieru Vilciens (PV) and intends to finish the upgrading of two remaining trains in April, Natalija Petrova, a representative of Daugavpils Lokomotivju Remonta Rupnica said, The Baltic Course reports.
The first PV train has already undergone certification and technical documents are being prepared for submission to the State Railway Technical Inspectorate, which has to approve the new trains’ conformity with government regulations.
Petrova said that work has been completed on four of the diesel trains to be upgraded under the EU-funded project and that they are ready for test runs.
As reported, PV has to finish the train upgrading project by June 30 under a decision taken by the government at the end of last year.
Because of a delay in the planned upgrade of its diesel trains, PV will be able to use only 50% of the EU funding allocated to the project and will have to borrow the remaining money, PV CEO Andris Lubans said.
The EU Cohesion Fund was expected to pay 85% of the project’s expenses and 70% of the contract’s total value. PV, however, is going to demand a fine, which would be close to 10% of the contract’s value, from the company performing the train upgrade. The railway company has not yet named the estimated size of the lost EU funding.
