The EP20 locomotives reach 100 million kilometres

Transmashholding EP20 electric locomotivesTransmashholding EP20 electric locomotives manufactured at Novocherkassk Locomotive Building Plant (NEVZ) for Russian Railways have reached a milestone of 100 million kilometres of combined covered distance.

An EP20 locomotive is able to cover a maximum 1800-km in single trip, with a daily average run of 852 km in 2019. This was 43 km higher compared to 2018.
The main advantage of the EP20 is its dual-system (3kV and 25 kV) allowing it to operate on tracks, which are electrified both with direct and alternative current, reaching 200 km/h.

The locomotive is equipped with asynchronous traction drive which allows a significant reduction in life cycle costs, with longer intervals between maintenance operations and significant energy savings.

The technical solutions of the EP20 electric locomotives enable service intervals of 25,000 km and overhaul intervals of 150,000 km. Locomotive’s module cab complies with modern safety, ergonomic, comfort, and aesthetic requirements and features a comprehensive microclimate system.

NEVZ manufacturers EP20 locomotives since 2012, using domestic parts and components from 20 Russian regions. In the latter years, the manufacturer undergone substantial import substitution efforts for an array of critical components, which included traction and auxiliary converters, pneumatic current collecting gear, driver’s cabin, and sanitary modules.

Currently, 72 Transmashholding EP20 electric locomotives were produced and shipped to the customers under life-cycle contracts, under which the manufacturer is carrying out the responsibility for the vehicles throughout their entire service life.

The maintenance of all EP20 locomotives is performed by the NEVZ Service Center in Moscow.

In Russia, the locomotives are in operation on the railway networks of Moscow, Gorkovskaya, Oktyabrskaya, North-Caucasus, and South-Eastern Railways. The locomotives offer transport services between Moscow and Adler, Nizhny Novgorod, Saint-Petersburg, Anapa, Voronezh, Orsk, Kazan and Ekaterinburg. They are also providing transport services in Minsk, Belarus, and Vainikkala, Finland.

The EP20 locomotive is the first in the series of the new Alstom-TMH joint product range. In 2010, Russian Railways and TMH signed a contract for the supply of 200 EP20 locomotives.
