TCDD sets the target to 25.000 km of railways

Turkey-HST_indexImportant steps are to be taken in oder to develop the Turkish high speed rail network. Ömer Yıldız, the General Manager of Turkish Railways (TCDD) said the State railway company wants to be able to transport 1 billion passengers and 76 million tonnes of freight. The target envisages the construction of 3.500 km of high speed rail so that the entire high speed network could reach 8.500 km and, also, the construction of 1.000 kilometres of conventional railway and thus, the conventional railway system should reach 13.000 km.
The total length of the Turkish railway network is planned to reach 25 thousand kilometers, Yıldız said. The railway transport sector was restructured in an effort to make the railways more effective and efficient, according to TCDD. Between 2004 – 2014, an average of 175 kilometers a year were build Yıldız said, adding that TCDD will continue with the construction of the 3.500 kilometres of high speed rail. The General Manager of TCDD also added that the funds allocated to the railway sector in 2003 amounted to TRY 1.1 billion (USD 365 million) towards TRY8.8 billion (USD 3 bilion) in 2015, stressing that important steps are to be taken for the development of high-speed trains.
