SKM Warszawa buys 21 Elf EMUs

SKM Warszawa, a Polish suburban rail operator, and Pesa Bydgoszcz signed a contract for the supply of up 21 Elf EMUs. Under the PLN 310.5 million (EUR 72 million) contract, the new trains will be delivered starting 2020 with the last batch of vehicles in 2023.
Within the next two years, Pesa will deliver eight-five car and five four-car trains and, by the end of 2023, the company will have to deliver the last 8 EMUs, of which one four-car and seven-five car trains. The contract also includes the delivery of the driving simulator and 15 years of employees training and maintenance services.
The new trains will allow the development of rail services during peak hours and the deployment of new connections after completion of renovation and modernization works within the Warsaw Railway Node.
Elf EMUs will have air-conditioned systems and will be adapted to passengers with disabilities, and will be equipped with monitoring and passenger information system, ticketing systems as well as Wi-Fi hotspots and USB chargers.
“This is the largest train acquisition in operator’s history. The new trains will significantly increase the transport capacity of the company and will allow the launch of further rail connections in Warsaw agglomeration, including on Piaseczno and Ożarów Mazowiecki routes,” Renata Kaznowska, the deputy Mayor of Warsaw said.
The project has received a PLN 202.7 million (EUR 47 million) EU funding under the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment for 2014-2020, Priority V: “Development of rail transport in Poland “. This also included the modernisation of Szczęśliwice depot valuated at PLN 44.9 million (EUR 10.4 million).
In 2017, SKM Warszawa registered a 7.60% increase in terms of number of passengers, comparing with 2016. Since 2007, the operator has purchased 28 modern trains, deployed on 4 routes, which transported 23 million passengers in 2017.
