Siemens and Newag could win contract for Sofia metro line

07-sofiaA consortium led by Siemens EOOD Bulgaria, together with Siemens AG Austria and Newag is most likely to supply the 20 new metro trains and security and automation systems for the planned third metro line of Sofia. The consortium offered the smallest price for the contract, of BGN 418 million (about EUR 209 million) + VAT, which is within the estimated price of BGN 420 million.
The other candidate, Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), offered a much higher price, of BGN 483 million (EUR 247 million), which makes Siemens the likely winner.
According to sources, if they win the contract, Siemens Bulgaria will take over the local management of the project and the supply of security systems, while Polish Newag will assemble the trains with parts provided by Siemens AG Austria.
