Romanian rail transport market shows a growing trend

Marius Chiper_IMG_6614“In the recent years, the railway infrastructure in Romania had a positive and surprising evolution, it reached a level that allows CFR SA, the national railway infrastructure manager to develop and to plan strategies. We managed to obtain State subsidies for rail, which is a plus compared to the 2000s when the level of State financing for the railways was extremly low.
Thus, for the period 2010 – 2015 the market for rail stabilized and now it becomes predictable, with a growing trend,” Marius Chiper, general manager of CFR SA, said when attending the Railway PRO Technologies and Services Forum – “Innovating with smart railway infrastructures”, organized by Railway PRO and Club Feroviar, with the support of the Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF), in Buzău (Romania), between February 24 – 25.

Investments for the railway infrastructure are needed, we have a high growth potential and the lately positive trend shows us that we need sustained investment in infrastructure, for economical and social development.
There is an urgent need of upgrading the rail infrastructure, in particular the Pan-European corridors and the TEN-T network sections on the Romanian territory and the integration in the European network of high-speed rail transport.
“Furthermore, we need to relocate some of the freight flows from road to rail, Marius Chiper said.
CFR SA’s strategy for the coming period will focus on increasing the competitiveness of rail transport on the domestic market and the integration of the Romanian railway system in the Single European Railway Area.
Over the next period, CFR SA plans to purchase new small/smart maintenance tools and equipment, investments in safer and efficiently train control installation and the of new railway sections.
For the 2015 – 2020 period, CFR estimates a need for investments of EUR11 billion  and for the 2021-2030 period , the necessary for railway investments amounts to EUR 18 billion.
According to CFR SA data, rehabilitation of the Rhine – Danube Corridor the Northern Branch needs EUR 2.5 billion, rehabilitation of the Rhine – Danube Corridor the Southern Branch needs EUR 2.1 billion, rehabilitation/modernization the Orient/East-Med Corridor needs EUR 182 million, for the rehabilitation/modernization of the Core TEN-T network EUR 4 billion are needed and for the rehabilitation/modernization the Comprehensive TEN-T network EUR 4 billion are needed as well.
