DG MOVE: Rail maintenance is about better use of money

IMG_6633-6644 PanoramicAccording to the rail market monitoring system of the Commission, across the EU from combined Member States and EU sources on average, roughly the same amounts spent annually in renewals, maintenance and enhancements is approximately. The amount is EUR 30 billion pa, in 2012, Frank Jost, Strategy Director DG MOVE – European Commission explained, during Railway PRO Innovating with smart railway infrastructures Forum, organised by Railway PRO and Club Feroviar, on 24-25 February.
‘There is a strong balance between maintenance and operation. Do not disrupt the financing for the maintenance activity. I have to say that is not about huge investment, it’s about making a better use of money. EC will urge to ensure that the rail maintenance is implemented,’ Jost said.
Relating to railway maintenance, the current situation is characterised by insufficient funding for maintenance activity of some Member States’ national networks, EU funds limited to upgrading, rehabilitation and enhancements on Core Network.
