Polish Government considers merging airline and railway companies

PKP-Intercity_indexPolish Treasury is considering merging the state airlines LOT with its railway cargo carrier PKP Cargo or the state railways’ PKP Intercity unit, as well as a possible financial aid for LOT from the state railways. This unusual idea comes with the aim to help LOT survive.
In this way, the Ministry would strengthen the airlines company, which once again found itself in a difficult financial situation. The net loss for 2015 is estimated at PLN250 million (EUR57 million).
Although, the Treasury did not confirm oficially that it takes into account such a scenario. The Treasury’s last analysis on the future of LOT assumed that the state authority would take control over the airline company.
Now is too early to talk about specific solutions except one: the company needed capital support to allow its full development and return to the market, the Ministry of Treasury believes.
However, according to the information of “Rzeczpospolita” newspaper, the ministry held a meeting devoted to the idea but it didn’t consult  any of the two railway companies.
