Nexans secures global agreement with Alstom

cables for rolling stockAlstom awarded Nexans a three-year global frame agreement to design and supply its Flamex range of cables for rolling stock which includes metro trains, trams and LRVs, as well as high speed trains.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nexans will supply Alstom with tens of thousands of kilometers of cables a year for electrical backbone of trains in applications ranging from high voltage cables for the pantograph and power distribution but also control and data cables for sensors.

A one-meter length of a modern train carriage will be fitted with around 1 kilometer of cables. For the communication network, Nexans designed new types of cables for Alstom including Ethernet cables for faster data transmission and low loss coaxial cables for antenna which is essential for Wi-Fi development. They will support the increased levels of data which are essential to support passenger information, entertainment and monitoring systems.

The cables are manufactured in Nexans’ plants in France and Germany for supply to various Alstom’s manufacturing sites and subcontractors, located across the world.

“We have a long-standing partnership with Alstom and we are very proud to renew our agreement for a further three years. This frame agreement underlines Nexans ambition to be market leader in enhanced solutions for the global rolling stock market,” said Michael Luther, Nexans Segment Manager Rolling Stock.

Nexans tailored solutions to help Alstom completing on time challenging projects. Nexans Smart inventory management facilitates the real-time monitoring and management of stocks by enhancing real-time stock visibility, anticipating real-time stock consumption, accelerating stock reception processes and procedures and optimising stock tracking and counting processes.

The Flamex power, control and communication cables are compliant with EN 45545-2 requirements for the highest hazard level class and restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) compliant. The cables will offer exceptional performance in terms of fire safety to protect passengers, being both flame and fire retardant and emitting low smoke and toxicity. The cables for rolling stock must be able to support applications in terms of extreme temperatures, as well as high stresses, water, chemicals, impact and vibration.
