Iasi invests EUR 43 million to rehabilitate five tram lines

Iasi Municipality, in Romania, will access significant European funding in the current budget exercise starting with the second half of 2018.
Iasi Mayor Mihai Chirica presented an updated version of the projects submitted for getting non-reimbursable financing worth around EUR 58 million. Funds will be allocated to the city through the Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020. The Municipality plans to spend this money mostly on the rehabilitation of tram infrastructure, on the following routes:
– Cinci Drumuri – Pădurii Street – Nicoriţă Street
– Podul Roş – Primăverii Street (Ţesătura)
– Virgil Săhleanu Street (between the junction with Metalurgiei Street and the Industrial Area end)
– Bucşinescu – Calea Chişinăului (including the rehabilitation of Tudor Vladimirescu bridge)
– Iaşi – Dancu (Doi Băieţi – Aurel Vlaicu Street – administrative limit of Iaşi, including the rehabilitation of Ciurchi II Bridge).
The five tram lines have been divided into three projects, each of them also including the procurement of new trams. The project, financed with European funds, includes the acquisition of 12 new trams. These projects have a value estimated at over EUR 43 million, according to the local press.
Moreover, Iasi Municipality will carry out another two projects with European funds. These projects consist of the development of an alternative transport system using bike rental stations (a project worth over EUR 4 million) and of a e-ticketing system to improve mobility in the Metropolitan Area (worth EUR 1.6 million).
“The money exists and it is good it was transferred to local authorities. Iasi has EUR 58.3 million transferred and we hope to be able to spend it in the programming period. Our entire team is ready, we meet often and we thank the North-East Regional Development Agency for its support consisting in both consultancy and implementation”, said mayor Mihai Chirica.
Apart from these investment programmes, Iasi also has two complementary, yet extremely important, programmes for urban mobility because they will support the Municipality in buying new trams.
One of these programmes is implemented by the Ministry of Development, through which the city of Iasi would benefit from 16 trams. The procurement is nation-wide and the programme also includes other Romanian municipalities. The second complementary project is managed by the Environment Fund Administration. In this case, the city of Iasi could also benefit from EUR 12 million for the procurement of eco-friendly transport modes (trams and buses).
