First Lusail Citadis tram completed

The production of the first, out of 28, trams for Lusail system was completed, Qatar Rail announced. The Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) took place at Alstom factory in La Rochelle. Alstom is currently working for the manufacture of 28 Citadis trams and power generation equipment. The low-floor trams are being designed to withstand harsh weather conditions.
“We are very pleased to be here to witness yet another significant milestone in Qatar Rail’s projects, namely the Lusail Tram project which is one of the pillars of the integrated transport system that we seek to achieve. And through all those consecutive achievements, we confirm that our projects are very well on track according to schedule and Qatar can look forward to an advanced future transport system,” Qatar Transport Minister Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti said, during a visit at Alstom’s factory.
The 5-car tram is 33 meters long in single unit and can accommodate 207 passengers in “common” and “family” classes. It can be coupled to double its capacity.
Lusail tram network, which will launch in 2020, has a total length of 28 km and includes three lines and 25 stations. The tram project is 71 percent completed.
In 2016, Alstom and Qatar Rail unveiled the design of the Citadis trams. The design of the tram is inspired by the Dhows, traditional boats of the area. The tram’s blue tones also reflect the sea, inviting passengers to climb aboard and take a cool break from the heat of Qatar. The interior design echoes the architecture of the area, incorporating touches of yellow that recall the Lusail flower.
Within the Lusail tram project, Alstom as part of a consortium formed with QDVC (a Qatari shareholding company in charge of civil works) was awarded the contract for the tram system, including the supply of Citadis trams, power supply, signalling and track works.
