Comsa wins a new modernisation contract in Portugal

Portugal North International Corridor

Comsa and its Portuguese subsidiary Fergrupo won two contracts on Portugal North International Corridor which include Beira Alta line modernisation and for the construction of the Concordancia de Mealhada single-track line. The project has a value of EUR 74.7 million.

The company will carry out the modernisation of a 33.7 km section of the Beira Alta line, between Pampilhosa – Santa Comba Dão. This section is located about 20 km north of the city of Coimbra, extending eastward, crossing the municipalities of Mealhada, Mortágua and Santa Comba Dão.

The main works include the improvement of the infrastructure and superstructure of the road, repair and improvement works for 8 bridges and 10 tunnels, the construction of new overpasses and underpasses and improvement of longitudinal and transverse drainage, and the modernisation and platform extensions at Mortágua station,

The Concordancia de Mealhada project includes the construction of a 3.1 km single-track line, of which 1.25 km will be constructed as a viaduct. The works will enable the connection between the Northern Line and the Beira Alta Line, improving the country’s mobility.

Both projects are integrated into the Portugal North International Corridor and considered a priority in the Strategic Plan for Transport and Infrastructure of Portugal.

North International Corridor comprises Leixões, Beira Alta and Beira Baixa lines. The Beira Alta modernisation project includes four railway sections: Pampilhosa – Mangualde, Mangualde – Guarda, Guarda – Vilar Formoso and Concordância da Mealhada, the section between the North Line and Beira Alta Line.

For the Beira Alta modernisation, has received a EUR 375.8 million CEF funding for detailed design and works on the Pampilhosa-Vilar Formoso section. EUR 547.74 million is the total value of the project which will ensure an interoperable connection between Aveiro and Vilar Formoso, at the Spanish border.

In January, Infraestruturas de Portugal awarded Comsa consortium a contract for the modernisation of the Évora Norte – Freixo section on the South International Corridor.
