Bids submission for Thessaloniki Metro O&M contract expected soon

The submission of offers for the PPP contract which will be carried out in a period of 11 years is expected to take place on February 28th.

The EUR 1.5 billion Thessaloniki Metro project comprises two lines which are currently under construction and is expected to be put into operation by the end of this year. Known as the base project, the 9.6 km Line 1 will be served by 13 stations and a depot in the area of Pylea. The driverless metro line will connect N. Sid. Stathmos in the west with Nea Elvetia in the east. In October 2022, the track works and the installation of the signalling equipment took place in the tunnels between the New Railway Station and Dimokratias station and the construction works were performed at all stations along the line.

The Line 1 will be operated by 18 fully automatic and air-conditioned trains. When completed, the line will have a daily ridership of 313,000 passengers and will remove 57,000 cars per day, reducing the CO2 emissions by 212 tonnes each day.

The Thessaloniki Metro project also includes an underground extension to Kalamaria covering a 4.8 km line with five stations from Nomarhia to Mikra. Along the line works are implemented at all five stations and the track work is progressing. This project is 85% completed.

When completed, this line will be daily used by 63,000 passengers and it is expected that 12,000 cars will be removed each day reducing the CO2 emissions by 43 tonnes per day. The distance between Mikra station and the centre of the city will be covered in 15 minutes.

Among other possible consortium, the Thema consortium comprising ATM, the public transport company of Milan, and Egis are preparing to submit the offer for a contract covering the operation and maintenance of Thessaloniki Metro. The two companies propose their services based on their extensive experience in launching and safely operating the driverless metro systems in Copenhagen (DK), in Milan  (IT) and in Riyadh (KSA), based on similar technology, aimed specifically at meeting and exceeding Attiko Metro’s performance requirements.
