BDZ announced an open procedure tender for 42 new EMUs

Bulgarian Railways’ Passenger Division (BDZ Passengers) announced an open procedure for the acquisition and maintenance of 42 EMUs. The deadline for submitting bids is October 12, with the opening of bids taking place on October 15, 2018.
According to the tender requirements, 42 EMUs will be purchased, along with the provision for maintenance for up to 15 years, including repairs, but no more than 2,8 million kilometers mileage.
The value of the order is estimated at BGN 675 million (EUR 345 million).
It is estimated that the new trains will enter commercial operation starting with 2023, while by 2028 an acquisition of another 43 EMUs will still be necessary.
The final approval for the new acquisition, of 43 such trains, will only take place after the new parliamentary elections in Bulgaria announced for 2020 or by 2021, at the latest.
In July, the Bulgarian government allocated BDZ for this acquisition the amount of BGN 100 million (EUR 51.1 million).
The acquisition of the new EMUs in Bulgaria will not be carried out with the support of European funds, so both the Government and BDZ Passengers will have to identify financing sources to pay the entire order of the electrical multiple units.
