Alstom invests EUR 115 million to expand Polish train production

Alstom is investing PLN 487 million (EUR 115 million) over five years to expand its railway rolling stock production capacity in Poland. The investment, which began in 2022 and runs through 2027, covers the company’s sites in Chorzów, Wrocław, and Nadarzyn.

To date, around PLN 320 million (EUR 75 million) has already been allocated to infrastructure expansion and site modernisation, including a new aluminium welding line at the Wrocław facility. This has enhanced the site’s manufacturing capabilities, previously focused on carbon steel products.

The next phase of investment will see approximately PLN 170 million (EUR 40 million) directed towards Alstom’s largest Polish facility in Chorzów. This includes the construction of three new halls, covering nearly 8,000 square metres, a new rail track, and the installation of advanced production equipment. The expansion will support the production of both single- and double-decker trains for clients across Europe, including Denmark, Romania, and Germany.

Alstom will also adapt one of the existing halls in Chorzów, previously used to manufacture nearly 1,300 cars for 324 Coradia Stream electric multiple units for the Italian market over a six-year period. The final vehicle for this contract was completed in spring 2025, marking a key milestone for the site and its workforce of over 1,000 employees involved in the project.

“We are working hard to meet a growing demand for high-quality rolling stock in both the European and global markets. The Polish teams have played a key role in both designing and producing new trains, components and solutions that make mobility safe, comfortable, environmentally friendly and accessible,” said Beata Rusinowicz, Managing Director of Alstom in Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic States.

“With new production capacities in our Polish sites, we are planning to execute an ambitious portfolio of orders for international clients. This includes the production of Coradia Stream trains for Denmark, Romania and Bulgaria, as well as double-decker Coradia Max trains for German rail operators from the Bremen – Lower Saxony (LNVG), Baden-Württemberg, and Main-Weser networks. Orders from these clients include a total of over 200 units,” she added.

In 2024, Alstom further enhanced its production capabilities with a new 10,000-square-metre hall at its Świętochłowice site. The facility produces components such as train cabs and metro car subassemblies, and is involved in both new-build and refurbishment work. It includes servicing stations for up to six vehicles simultaneously and operates closely with the Chorzów site, which serves as Alstom’s competence centre for metro and regional train production.
