Stadler wins Stuttgart LRV contract

LRV fleetThe public transport company of Stuttgart, Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen (SSB), awarded Stadler a contract for the supply of 40 LRV fleet with an option for 30 additional light rail vehicles. The first LRV is expected to be delivered in 2025.

The new high-floor bidirectional S-DT8.16 vehicles are intended for use on the network of the state capital of Baden-Württemberg.

“The Europe-wide tender has resulted in a well-known and competent rail vehicle manufacturer – Stadler. The company already knows the demands and needs of the SSB and its passengers,” Thomas Moser, spokesman of the board and technical director of the SSB said.

The two-part trams offer space for more than 250 people over a length of around 40 metres, which is fully accessible.

The 2.65 metre wide and comfortable LRVs have a spacious and bright passenger area and the four pivoting sliding doors on each side provide an optimal passenger flow

In contrast to the vehicles of previous series, the light rail vehicles of the S-DT8.16 series are characterised by their high energy efficiency and environmentally friendly operating resources.

The S-DT 8.16 vehicle is equipped with new technologies and was designed based on the basic concept of the light rail vehicles currently used by the SSB.

The new light rail vehicles will replace the existing S-DT 8.4 fleet which is now over 35 years old.

Stadler has delivered light rail vehicles to SSB since 2012. To date, the company has manufactured a total of 50 light rail vehicles of S-DT 12, S-DT 8.14 and S-DT 8.15 series and handed them over to the SSB and 10 LRVs of the S-DT 8.15 type are to be delivered by mid-2023.

SSB put into operation the first of three rack-and-pinion vehicles on October 8, 2022 in a ceremony held at Marienplatz.

With this LRV fleet contract, SSB will own 100 light rail vehicles and three rack-and-pinion train vehicles manufactured by Stadler.
