PSA Antwerp and Lineas have officially launched a new direct rail service connecting PSA’s terminal in Zeebrugge with the Noordzee Terminal in Antwerp. The announcement was made at the Transport Logistic trade fair in Munich, following the successful departure of a fully loaded freight train from Zeebrugge on 27 May. Regular operations began on 2 June, with the service running three times per week in both directions.
The new connection reinstates a crucial link between the two ports and forms part of PSA Antwerp’s wider Hinterland Connectivity Programme, which aims to enhance multimodal transport options and reduce reliance on road transport. The service is expected to carry around 26,000 TEUs annually.
“In line with PSA’s Node to Network strategy, we are continually strengthening our hinterland connectivity. This new rail service provides our customers with an expanded, sustainable, and efficient logistics offering between Zeebrugge and Antwerp.”
Lineas, responsible for the full operational management of the rail link, will integrate the service via its MainHub in Antwerp. This hub will serve as a consolidation point for both export cargo and the return of empty containers, ensuring optimal train utilisation and seamless distribution across Belgium and into the wider European hinterland.
“This initiative aligns perfectly with our strategy to expand our network with reliable, high-frequency links between key ports and industrial centres. Through smart routing and cargo consolidation, we are advancing modal shift goals and supporting broader climate targets,” Lineas CEO Erik Van Ockenburg commented.
The new rail link complements existing inland waterway services between the two ports, giving PSA and its customers greater flexibility in choosing the most suitable and sustainable transport solution.
The collaboration underscores PSA Antwerp and Lineas’ shared commitment to accelerating modal shift and creating climate-friendly logistics chains, in line with Belgian and EU environmental objectives.
