FS Group has once again been recognised by the Financial Times as one of Europe’s leading companies in the fight against climate change. The railway operator from Italy appears in the Europe’s Climate Leaders 2025 ranking, compiled in collaboration with Statista and supported by international organisations including the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The ranking highlights companies across Europe that have made the most significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—both direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2)—over the five-year period from 2018 to 2023. FS Group achieved a 13.9% reduction in its main emissions during that time, earning it a score of 65.10 and securing a place among the 600 best-performing European companies.
Around 80 Italian businesses are featured in the 2025 edition of the ranking. This year’s top performer is Swedish telecoms company Tele2, followed by the UK’s Intermediate Capital Group and Italy’s energy firm ERG, which share second place.
FS Group’s strong performance is credited to its integrated decarbonisation strategy, which has been validated by independent international bodies. Its action plan focuses on phasing out fossil fuels through the electrification of rail lines and use of alternative fuels, expanding the use of renewable energy including self-generation, and improving overall energy efficiency.
In 2024, FS Group received official certification of its emissions reduction targets from SBTi, the global initiative backed by UN Global Compact, WRI, CDP and WWF. The certification confirms that the group’s climate targets align with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
In addition, CDP awarded FS Group an A- rating for emissions management this year, placing it in the leadership band for the third consecutive year.
