Phoenix could extend the sales tax for funding light rail projects

phoenixThe Phoenix City Council could extend to 2050 an existing sales tax that is currently scheduled to end in 2020. The sales tax is used to fund Metro light rail extensions and other transportation projects. The tax expansion could be put on the August ballot. The 34-year sales tax could amount to $30.5 billion (27 million euros).
The money could be used to fund possible extensions of light rail to the Arizona Capitol, south Phoenix, Grand Canyon University, Arizona State University West and Paradise Valley Mall, Marty Shultz, co-chair of the Citizens Commission on the Future of Phoenix Transportation, said.
