Kenya launches Nairobi commuter rail modernisation

Kenya-mombasa-trainKenyan Government has revealed that plans to upgrade the commuter rail service for Nairobi and its environs are already underway. The developments include rehabilitation of the existing railway lines, introduction of new rolling stock and introduction of rail transport services to areas not covered by the rail network.
Important projects involve the construction of the double-track of Syokimau – City Centre rail section, the improvement of the frequency of the train serving the route and also serve the Standard Gauge Railway project effectively since passenger service on the SGR will terminate at the SGR Terminal in Syokimau.
Other developments targeting the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service will see the Government under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services Improvement Project (NaMSIP), improve the existing Nairobi Commuter Rail stations and halts within Kenya Railways Land. This is being carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development.
The Ministry has invited firms interested in carrying out the design review and construction supervision for works to improve the existing stations and halts to express their interest.
The scope of works for the consultancy includes providing the stations and halts with improved access; perimeter fencing of the railway land; provision of platforms and platform shades; provision of parking and kiss and ride facilities; provision of public toilets; security houses; lighting and water; and provision of ticketing and managers building.
The existing stations targeted under the programme are Ruiru, Kikuyu, Kahawa, Dandora railway stations. The halts include Githurai, Mwiki, Donholm, Pipeline, Embakasi Village commuter railway halts.
