Hungary: EIB to finance the modernization of two key railway lines

The modernization of Szolnok-Szajol railway line has a total cost estimated at EUR 77 million, with the proposed EIB finance of EUR 11 million. The project is a major project allocation under Cohesion Fund FL III Phasing Rail. The project involves the modernizationf of 6.4 km of railway line.
The second project involves the modernization of Gyoma-Bekescsaba line section a project that need a EUR 352 million investment. The project is under EIB’s appraisal  with a proposed financing of EUR 52 million. Under the project, 37 km of railway line will be modernized and the Békéscsaba Station and as well as the implementation of the ETCS Level 2 system from Budapest to the Romanian border.
Both projects are part of the upgrade programme of the existing railway corridor between Budapest – Szolnok – Szajol – Békéscsaba and Lökösháza state border towards Romania. The linee are part of the TEN-T core network (Mediterranean and Orient East/Med) and the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) priority corridor. The projects contribute to the objective of promoting sustainable transport on the TEN-T core network, with an expected increase in rail usage due to a modal shift from road.
The modernization of Szolnok-Szajol line and Gyoma-Bekescsaba line are major projects allocation under Cohesion Fund FL III Phasing Rail.
