Hamburg to expand its metro network

VLUU L310 W  / Samsung L310 WThe Hamburg Senate intends to provide EUR 72 million Germany’s federal regionalisation funds for the financing of metro expansion, with the construction of new metro line, U5, and extension of U4.
The preliminary design, design and approval planning for the extension of the U4 to Kleiner Grasbrook and Horner Geest are calculated each at EUR 15 million. The plans for the first phase of the new U5 from Bramfeld to City Nord will cost EUR 40 million. For the feasibility study of the U5 section from City North through downtown to Siemersplatz EUR 2 million have been estimated.
The completion of U4 line extension to Kleiner Grasbrook has been scheduled to take place until after the Olympics. 2019 will mark the start of the U4 extension to Horner Geest and the construction of the two new stops “Stoltestraße” and “Dannerstraße”.
“In view of Hamburg’s Olympic bid, we would like to accelerate all planning and take the next steps. The actual expansion of all track sections we will gradually implement with the participation of the Hamburg citizens,” Frank Horch, Hamburg Minister of the Economy, Transport and Innovation said.
The first phase of new metro line U5 involves the construction of Bramfeld – City North section, with feasibility study to be completed in November. After the plan approval procedure, in 2018, the construction of U5 will start in 2021.
The feasibility study for another section, from City North to Siemersplatz, as part of U5 line, will start early next year, with investigations to close by mid-2017. In 2016, also the feasibility studies for the other sections will also beginn and the decision taken on the U- and S-Bahn variants for Osdorfer Bron.
In addition, as part of metro development, will be build a new station on U1, between Farmsen and Berne, with a value of EUR 14.1 million.
