DB to invest EUR 825 million for high-speed track renewal

By 2023, Deutsche Bahn will invest EUR 825 million to renew Hanover – Würzburg and Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed railway lines. In total, DB will renew 722 km of tracks and will lay 1.1 billion of new sleepers.
“After almost 30 years, Deutsche Bahn is preparing to invest in high speed railway infrastructure. We invest and modernize for fast and reliable mobility,” DB Netz CEO Frank Sennhenn said.
EUR 640 million will be invested for Hanover – Würzburg high-speed line. Starting 2019, DB will launch the construction works to renew 532 km of tracks, 224 turnouts and laying 800,000 new sleepers and 500,000 tonnes of ballast.
The renewal of this route will be implemented in four successively phases. Next year, construction works will start on Hanover-Göttingen section, in 2021, Göttingen-Kassel section will see new tracks, and in 2022 and 2023, works will be implemented for Fulda-Würzburg and Kassel-Fulda respectively.
Starting 2020, DB will also launch renewal works for Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed line, which are expected to be completed within 205 days. Works will be focused on the renewal of 190 km tracks and 54 switches. 200,000 tonnes of new ballast will be installed and 315,000 new concrete sleepers will be laid. These works need a EUR 185 million investment.
