Czechia issues tender for Jihlava station transformation

Jihlava train stationThe Czech rail infrastructure manager Správa železnic (SZ) issued a tender for the comprehensive reconstruction of Jihlava train station which, in cooperation with the local town hall, a central transport terminal will be created.

CZK 1.75 billion (EUR 69.4 million) is the total investment value with the tender price for construction activities worth CZK 1.5 billion (EUR 59.6 million), excluding VAT. The implementation of the modernisation of ŽST Jihlava station, construction is proposed for co-financing by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund within the Transport Programme 2021–2027.

As part of the construction, the track configuration will be completely changed, a new underpass will be built, and the existing station building will be replaced by a new building. The result will be a modern interchange serving as a key point for all passenger transport in the region.

“The Jihlava train station is strategically located near the centre, which motivated us to pursue an ambitious goal – to turn it into the main transport hub of the regional metropolis with the potential of a future connection with the high-speed line between Prague and Brno. At the same time, the modernisation of the tracks will allow us to free up areas for the development of urban infrastructure and the construction of a central transport terminal,” the Director General of Správa železnic, Jiří Svoboda, said.

Under the project, works include the construction of a new traction system, the connections to the existing public transport system, a new park & ride facility with 68 spaces, the modification of station’s areas as well as road infrastructure rehabilitation. The project also includes new public lighting and pedestrian traffic, it also includes alternative transport stops and the expansion of public green areas.

“The city station in Jihlava will become a modern transport terminal of regional importance. It will provide passengers with a comfortable transfer between passenger rail, regular bus and urban public transport with adequate connections to pedestrian, bicycle and car routes,” the mayor of Jihlava, Petr Ryška, said.

Two newly built platforms will bring barrier-free access and more comfortable, convenient and faster boarding of trains. Passengers will reach the platform safely through the underpass, which will end behind the track, which will enable its future exit to Mostecká street. Access to the trains will be via stairs, which will be complemented by elevators.

The new station building will have two floors.The first will have a combined departure and arrival hall and the area used for short-term waiting will be equipped with appropriate furniture.There will be a separate waiting room for transferring passengers on the second floor.

The construction will also include the installation of new information panels and the modification of security and communication equipment.

Train operations will be controlled from the Jihlava station, where a control workplace has already been built in advance.

In March 2024, SZ selected the French-Czech association AREP Architects – monom for the architectural and urban planning of the Jihlava high-speed rail terminal, as part of the Prague – Brno HSR, which will also serve conventional, intercity, regional and commuter rail transport.

The planned high-speed rail terminal will serve the residents of the Vysočina region, especially Jihlava and the surrounding areas of the regional capital. The terminal will offer fast rail connections for regular commuting to the center of the capital, as well as convenient connections to Brno, Ostrava, Dresden, Vienna and many other cities. The location of the terminal on the outskirts of the regional town, close to the highway, will also offer problem-free parking and improved accessibility. The plan covers the construction of a parking area for 750 cars and later to be expanded for a capacity of up to 3,000 cars. Construction works for this terminal are expected to start in 2029. The high-speed rail connection to Jihlava terminal will take 36 minutes to Brno and less than one hour to Prague.
