Contract signed for a new rail bridge in Szczecin

railway bridge Polish rail infrastructure manager PKP PLK and Budimex signed a contract for the construction of a new railway bridge in Szczecin over Regalica River, providing greater opportunities for railways and inland waterway transport in Western Pomerania.

The project is carried out under a collaboration agreement signed by PKP PLK and the National Water Management Authority.

PLN 300 million (EUR 66 million) is the value of the entire project. “Improving the permanent connection between the country and the port in Szczecin: construction of a railway bridge over Regalica River” project has received EUR 7.1 million funding from the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility. The project benefits state budget and funding from PKP PLK owns sources, worth PLN 140 million (EUR 30.75 million).

The new bridge is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The new bridge will be built in the vicinity of the existing single-track bridge, which will be decommissioned and partially dismantled. The works will consider the conservation recommendations, according to which the elements of mechanical devices will be preserved.

The project also includes the modernisation of the Podjuchy station in Szczecin and its rail tracks will be reconstructed. Passengers will gain a higher platform, which will be adapted to passengers with disabilities, new shelters, benches, and bright lighting as well as clear signage.

Thanks to the investment, the trains will travel more efficiently over the new railway bridge, with a steel structure and reinforced concrete supports. The project covers the construction of the two electrified tracks allowing passenger trains to run at 120 km/h and freight trains with up to 90 km/h. The new facility will increase the transport capacity on the so called Nadodrzanka route, connecting Wrocław and Szczecin and Poznań, Szczecin and Świnoujście, freight trains benefiting increased access to the ports, particularly to Szczecin port.

The construction of a new railway bridge over Regalica is an investment of the National Water Management Authority through the Szczecin Branch, in close cooperation with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe. The works will be carried out as part of the governmental Flood Protection Project in the Oder and Vistula Basin.

In addition to increasing the capacity of railways in the region, the investment has strategic importance for inland waterway in the Szczecin Water Junction.

It will increase flood protection in the capital of Western Pomerania and will ensure more efficient navigation and the possibility of more effective work of icebreakers. The works will increase the clearance of the bridge, the structure of which will be raised about 6.2 m above the waterline.
